An Immersive Safari into the Life of Older Adults in Rural Areas
An authentic safari trip provided our clients with a unique opportunity to experience first-hand the daily life of Older Adults in rural areas of Japan. We observed typical housing conditions, attitudes and behaviors around aging, and learnt about user needs, drivers, and expectations related to assisted support at home and in assisted living facilities. The insights from this program informed technological solutions to maintain the quality of life and independence of Older Adults in Japan.
Our Work
- 7-day immersive safari through rural regions, including towns in Japan that are at risk of “disappearing” due to the decline in the younger population
- 8x Ethnography interviews, including home visits and daily activity participation and observation
- 4x Care facility visits across a spectrum of company types and service offers
- Cultural activities to set the frame for the Japanese insights, including regional relevant immersions and a temple stay
The Outcome
- Deep cultural understanding and knowledge building about living conditions and needs of users in comparison to urban users
- Personas representing relevant user groups
- Comprehensive portfolio of footage as references for product developers at home
- Highlight video for internal and external stakeholder presentations and promotions
“Thank you so much for making this trip such a memorable one. We wouldn’t have been able to create such an experience without you. I loved getting to know you all, and there was clearly so much care and attention to detail in the activities and participant selection. Getting to be part of the in-home ethnography research was very helpful today when starting our next project.”
