Developing and Localisation In-Home Robot Carer Technology for Japanese Users

A global robotics manufacturer and research institution worked closely with the Carter Group over multiple years and projects towards the goal of developing an in-home robotics solution for older adults. The Carter Group provided valuable efforts towards shaping product development for the Japanese market.

Our Work

  • Initial workshops with older adults and their caregivers to refine physical model design and material construction
  • Focus group interviews with professional physical therapists and caregivers to determine the level of physical and social support required
  • Individual depth interviews with single household older adults to assess the socialization, physical support, safety features, and language localization developments

The Outcome

  • A clear view of the localization efforts required to introduce caregiver robots to Japan; smaller footprint, polite language, and high socialization compared to American older adults
  • Research culminated in a white paper published by the research institution in December 2024

“Reviewing the slides, I found the report clear and well-laid out, highlighting the key sections of the study protocol. The content goes to the level of depth we wanted and provides the deep dives into assistive tech, assessments, and body mechanics we hoped to gain from the experts.”
