Evaluating Market Entry Potential for a Cordless Vacuum Cleaner Prototype in Japan

We partnered with a home appliance manufacturer to evaluate the market readiness of their cordless vacuum cleaner prototype for Japan. The objective was to identify the product’s strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement by comparing it with consumers’ currently used vacuum cleaners. Particular attention was given to the overall user experience in daily use, including usability, cleaning performance, storage convenience, and ease of maintenance.

Our Work

  • Conducted 10 in-home interviews with consumers in the Greater Tokyo Area to observe real-life cleaning routines, storage constraints, and living environments
  • Accompanied home visits with the client team to capture first-hand reactions and contextual usage of the prototype

The Outcome

  • Evaluated consumer reactions to the prototype from first impressions through hands-on use, assessing acceptance of key features such as usability, cleaning performance, handheld functionality, storage solutions, and the removable battery system
  • Identified expectations and pain points related to charging and maintenance, generating actionable insights for product refinement
  • Benchmarking against participants’ current vacuum cleaners provided an assessment of the prototype’s competitive potential in the Japanese market
